Oliver Bruce Calhoun

Oliver Bruce Calhoun was born in Stonington, Colorado on January 16th, 1923. He attended Elementary School in Canon City, Colorado and moved to Idaho in his late teens.

Bruce enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1942 and was trained in Harlingen, Texas...he served in Tunis, Tunisia and England.

Bruce flew 36 WWII missions as a B-17 Waist and tail gunner in the European theater. Bruce only missed 3 missions due to illness and the planes from those three missions never returned. Bruce was Discharged in 1945 and received his post war training in Biloxi, Miss., Ft. Hood Texas and Northern California.

Bruce returned to Bonner's Ferry, Idaho...on his motorcycle, in the winter...to marry Betty Welch in 1945 and they had two sons, William and Burton...

Following a few years of farming, Bruce developed an interest in logging and trucked logs in that industry until his retirement.

Bruce married Shelia (Brown) on April fool's day in 1972 and lived out their until retirement in Whitefish.

Bruce's hobbies included restoring Volkswagens, woodworking, hunting, boating, fishing (Whitefish Lake, Lake McDonald), racing logging trucks, and RVing around the country with memorable trips to Alaska and Mexico. Bruce was known as a grill master and an excellent cook.

A memorial service will be held on November 17th at 1 PM with Military Honors at Austin Funeral Home in Whitefish. Bruce's urn will be laid to rest at Glacier Memorial Gardens in Kalispell, Montana.
